February 2011. Kirima sub-location, Mbeere District
Lilian Nthiga plants seeds in the soil she has prepared on her farm. LilianÕs daughter Harriet works with Christian Community Services Mount Kenya East (CCSMKE) at Mayori station in KenyaÕs dry Mbeere District. Through CCS, Lilian has learnt about farming methods that make the best use of resources that are easily available to farmers across Mbeere. She has enthusiastically welcomed their ideas including keeping small animals and birds which can live off scraps and so are easier to look after when little food is available.
Christian Aid works with CCSMKE in Mbeere to give small-scale farmers scientific weather predictions. As the area faces increasingly unpredictable weather patterns these farmers will be taught how to interpret this information and develop more resilient approaches to farming Ð using different crop varieties and agricultural techniques to adapt to changing weather patterns.
